KINGSTON CHARM WINS THE FOUR PILLARS MIDWAY

Article from Racenet – Ray Thomas – 2nd November 2024

Kingston Charm races in famous colours and she did them proud with an exciting victory in the Four Pillars Midway at Rosehill courtesy of a brilliant ride from Zac Lloyd.

Kingston Charm revived memories of champion Tie The Knot with her upset win at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Star apprentice Zac Lloyd, wearing the Tait family’s famous colours of red with a white cap that were synonymous with Tie The Knot, guided Kingston Charm to a thrilling win in the $500,000 Four Pillars Midway (1500m).

The John Thompson-trained Kingston Charm is part-owned by James Tait, whose father, Sandy, raced Tie The Knot, one of the most popular champions of the modern era.

Tie The Knot, trained by the late Guy Walter, won 21 races of his 62 starts, including 13 Group 1 races and more than $6m prizemoney.

The Tait family have also owned the likes of Baguette, Cabochon, Spinning Hill, Wild Irish, and Whisked, the dam of Tie The Knot.

“I’m really happy for these owners,” Thompson said.

“They’re fantastic people, the Tait family, and their famous colours – it’s an honour to have them in the stable.

“They are great for racing and it is good to see them winning these big races.

“To have a horse like Kingston Charm, just coming through the grades, and win a nice race for them is fantastic.”

Kingston Charm ($15), superbly ridden by Lloyd, scored by a half-length from the Richard and Will Freedman-trained duo Piraeus ($7 equal favourite) and Rolling Magic ($11).

It was a blanket finish with only a length separating the top five with Alabama State ($7 equal favourite) and Harlow Mist ($7.50) fourth and fifth respectively.

“Zac got a bit of confidence when he won on her at Hawkesbury last start,” Thompson said.

“She’s a tricky horse, you’ve just got to take your medicine early and just hold her up for that last shot at them.

“She only got home in the last centimetre the other day and today was pretty similar. He (Lloyd) is riding super. He’s a brilliant young rider and the world is his oyster.”

Lloyd, 21, wasn’t even born when Tie The Knot was dominating Sydney racing during the late 1990s-early 2000s.

But Sydney’s two-time reigning premier apprentice, who is due out of his time later this month, wore the colours with distinction on Kingston Charm.

“She was fantastic,” Lloyd said. “I came into today with a lot of confidence after the feeling she gave me at Hawkesbury last start.

“I said to the John pre-race, ‘they might be over-exaggerating this coming off the fence, and I think our best option will be just to keep it smooth and up the inside’.

“Obviously with 20 horses in the race, John just gave me one instruction. He said ‘don’t get her out of her comfort zone’.

“That ultimately put me a pair or two further back than I would have liked and there were a lot of horses in front of me but I just went underneath them and she was really brave and good through the line. It’s good when a plan comes off.

Bred by Burnewang North from the famed Kingston Park family we are excited to continue to watch this mare progress.

Lombardo (I Am Invincible-Swinging Babe) returned to his favourite track at Morphettville today (11/9) and showed us his true self with a dominant win over his rivals over 1200m.  Ridden beautifully by Kayla Crowther, Lombardo led from the front and destroyed his opposition.  We are hoping that Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr have him back in form and he progresses on this preparation.

Velours Bleu (Nicconi-National Velvet) scored her maiden victory at her second start with a 1.5 length win at Echuca today (11/9).  Ridden like the best horse in the race by Zac Spain and she duly saluted.  Congratulations to her owners including friends James Bester, Graeme Hall & Eric Lucas.

Caravaggio’s The Fortune Teller Toughs It Out in Carbine Club (G3)

BREEDNET – Mark Smith – Saturday April 1. 2023

With rapidly deteriorating conditions at Randwick, the Group III Fujitsu Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) turned into a slog fest, which suited the Victorian visitor The Fortune Teller just fine.

Ridden by Tom Marquand for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, the 3yo son of Caravaggio (USA) rallied after being headed by the Maurice (JPN) colt Matcha Latte to eke out a maiden stakes success by a head.

The Tivaci filly Wolverine was two and three-quarter lengths back in third as the eight-horse field spread out of 42 lengths.

The winner of a Swan Hill maiden on debut last August, The Fortune Teller owns placings in the Group II Sandown Guineas, Group II Autumn Stakes, and Group III Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington.

“I think the horse needed a very strong rider. It was a bit of a colt run last start (in the Australian Guineas), which was uncustomary; he’s been very genuine,” Maher said.

“We made the decision to bring him up hoping the favourite (Osipenko) was going to be scratched, which then made it a very attractive race.

“The team have done a great job. He’s always been a very consistent, high-class colt, with a great group of owners who have been long-time supporters and good friends and Tommy Marquand was very strong. Perfect.

“He’s going the right way, he may end up in Brisbane.”

It was a first win back from injury for Tom Marquand.

“It took the weather to be like it is at home (UK) for me to get a winner on the board,” Marquand joked.

“Being back in the saddle last week, I was probably just getting a bit impatient. Ciaron (Maher) and David (Eustave) have been great supporters, and nice to reward them with probably a bit of a surprise winner, I guess.”

Bred by Burnewang North Pastoral and Peter Raftopoulous, The Fortune Teller was a $90,000 weanling purchase for Ciaron Maher Racing at the COVID-hit 2020 Great Southern Sale, held online.

From the first crop of Scat Daddy’s dual Group 1 winner Caravaggio (USA), The Fortune Teller is the best of two winners from as many to race from the winning Commands mare National Velvet.

Out of a half-sister to Group 1 ATC Spring Champion Stakes winner Complacent and Listed Dulcify Stakes winner Ataraxia, National Velvet has a Harry Angel (IRE) 2yo filly, which was pinhooked by Hopetoun Farm from Burnewang North Pastoral at the 2021 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale. Reoffered at the 2022 Inglis June (Early) Online Sale, she sold for $22,500.

National Velvet has a Maurice (JPN) weanling filly and missed last spring.

The Fortune Teller is the first stakes-winner in Australia for Caravaggio (USA), which shuttled to Coolmore Stud for one season.

Reset’s Mission Phoenix Toughs It Out in January Stakes

Breednet – Mark Smith – Saturday January 7 2023

The in-form Reset gelding Mission Phoenix made every post a winner in Saturday’s Listed January Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill.

Mission Phoenix toughs it out (image Steve Hart)

Bred by the Cathy Hains-run Burnewang North Pastoral, this is a pedigree over forty years in the making. Mission Phoenix is a third-generation descendant of the Seattle Slew mare Mysticaro (USA), a half-sister to David Hains’ 1991 English Two Thousand Guineas winner Mystiko.

Ridden by Tyler Schiller for Mark Newnham, Mission Phoenix held the fast-finishing Aleas (GB) (Archipenko) by a short-neck with a neck further back to Bonny Ezra (Road to Rock) in third.

“He has been a model of consistency all preparation, and Tyler has a good association with him,” stable representative Aaron Lau said.

“He makes his own luck and is tough. He had to do a bit of work early. Tyler rated him perfectly, and it is a good win for the owners who had to wait a bit as he had a few injury issues early on, but they are reaping the rewards now.”

A $62,500 purchase for Randwick Bloodstock Agency Pty Ltd (FBAA) at the 2017 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale, Mission Phoenix was consigned by Millford Thoroughbreds to the 2018 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, where he was hammered down to P L Bloodstock for $65,000.

He is the best of two winners from as many to race out of the Fastnet Rock mare Oh Susannah, a daughter of Listed Frank Underwood Cup winner Lake Susannah (Filante).

Oh Susannah has her first foal in four seasons in October, a colt by Inference. She was not covered last spring.

It’s fitting that the only stakes race run in Australia on Saturday should be won by a descendent of the late Sir Patrick Hogan’s breed shaper Sir Tristram.

Mission Phoenix is the 37th stakes-winner for the former Darley stallion Reset, an unbeaten son of Zabeel.

Kingston Park luck provides Hains with Group 1 victory – TDN by Kristen Manning 22/5/22

Burnewang North Pastoral’s Cathy Hains didn’t watch Saturday’s G1 The Goodwood from home, instead she ventured to the Mornington Peninsula to cheer on the horse she bred – then sold – then bought back into… the big and talented Lombardo (I Am Invincible).

For there is considerable Mornington Peninsula history to the Hains’ story, Cathy’s father – the renowned businessman David Hains – breeding many a top-class galloper from the family’s Kingston Park base.

And so Cathy was, she laughed, “Channelling some of that Kingston Park luck!”

It did the trick too, Lombardo finding the lead from barrier 18 and travelling so sweetly in the lead for Zac Spain, giving a nice kick in the run home and holding off all challengers to win by an impressive 1.5l.

In doing so, the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained 5-year-old recorded the eighth success of his 16-start career, one that has seen him amass over $715,000 in stakes.

What a horse he has been for his happy connections, led by Cathy Hains who was taken by Lombardo from his very early days.

Making his way into the world on August 19, 2016, Lombardo was always, Hains reported, “A really imposing horse.

“He was a gorgeous young horse. Big but well-balanced, strong and masculine; he really took the eye.”

With Burnewang North Pastoral’s policy always to sell, Lombardo made his way to the 2018 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale where Mick Price and Aquis Farm secured him with their top bid of $300,000.

“A good result for us,” Hains recalled.

Always keeping a close eye on her Rochester-based farm’s graduates, Hains enjoyed watching Lombardo display early potential – the bay showing a terrific turn off foot claiming a Bendigo maiden at his debut in February 2020.

He was still a big baby at that stage, however, and after few more runs (including the first of his five Morphettville successes) the stable advised connections that it would be best for the young horse to be gelded.

Whilst he was displaying potential, racing geldings was not part of the Aquis business model and the opportunity arose for Cathy Hains to buy back in.

And so he made his way back to Burnewang North where he was well looked after during a five month break, one which saw him mature and strengthen.

Since then it has been a great ride for Hains and her fellow owners and part of her enjoyment stems from the links with history and the important people in her life that Lombardo provides.

“His dam Swinging Babe was one of the very first mares we bought and she became a real farm favourite,” Hains said, keen to pay homage to her friend and agent who knew just which mares to recommend, the late Steve Brem.

“Several of our foundation mares were owned in partnership with our good friend Eric Lucas,” Hains said. “And Swinging Babe (who was retired three years ago) was one of those. And Lucas is now a part owner of Lombardo as well.”

It is a real family feel to Burnewang North with the farm’s business manager Tanya Edwards becoming as attached to the stud’s horses as anyone.

“She just loves Lombardo and goes to all of his starts,” Hains said. “She is a South Australian girl so she was at Morphettville on Saturday with her family and she just went berserk!”

Also gaining great satisfaction from the Group 1 result was David Hains. No longer breeding horses himself, he does however take pride from his daughter’s achievements and she is thrilled to share them with him.

LOMBARDO STRIKES GOLD IN THE GOODWOOD – SA Racing 21/5/2022

Lombardo capped off an unforgettable Adelaide Racing Carnival for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, as the 3YO gelding claimed The Goodwood in dominant fashion at Morphettville on Saturday.

Despite drawing wide in barrier 18, Lombardo left the gates perfectly and showed strong early speed to cross fellow frontrunners Bella Nipotina and defending champion Savatoxl. Halvorsen and The Astrologist made up the minor placings in the $502,250 feature.

The Price/Kent stable, who seven days earlier won the SA Derby with Jungle Magnate, finished the carnival in style, as jockey Zac Spain claimed his second Group 1 triumph, following the 2021 CF Orr Stakes.

Spain, who spent a significant portion of his career in Adelaide, was aboard Lombardo when the horse broke it’s maiden.

“He (Lombardo) just loves Adelaide,” Spain said.

“He thrives when he’s here. Mick and Michael do such a great job to have their horses on big days spot on.

“It’s really shown in the last few months.”

The Price/Kent stable have been the story of the Adelaide Racing Carnival, claiming two of the four Group 1s, as well as unearthing another potential star in Illation.

But today, it was all about Lombardo.

“The horse deserves his chance. He was booming (today), ready to go.” Mick Price said post-race.

“He’s a big free striding son of I Am Invincible and he’s a lovely horse to race.

“Zac is a worker. He’s a humble guy and he does his best. I was very glad he got to maintain his association with the horse.”

Two of the main support races on the card also went to the Price/Kent stable, as The Amazonian salutes in the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic, while Maximillius scored in the Group 3 David Coles Stakes.

LOMBARDO HAS WOOD ON RIVALS – Herald Sun 22/5/2022 – Tom Biddington

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr put an exclamation mark on a brilliant Adelaide carnival as South Australian specialist Lombardo ran his rivals off their feet in the Group 1 Goodwood.

The stable doesn’t know what it is about a trip across the border that turns a good sprinter into an unbeatable one, but Lombardo now boasts five wins from five starts in Adelaide and has scaled heights connections could only dream of.

It was a dominant display from the five-year-old, with Zac Spain spearing him straight to the front from battier 18 and that’s where he stayed, finding an extra gear when the challengers loomed to salute by 1 1/2 lengths at $18.  Halvorsen ($26) was second, with The Astrologist ($11) third, while Lombardo’s stablemate and $4.40 favourite Extreme Warrior dropped out to finish 18th.

Pre-race, Price felt Lombardo was absolutely primed for the contest and so it proved, the gelding producing a career-best performance to capture the iconic South Australian sprint.

“No (I didn’t think I could win a Group 1 with him), but he deserved his chance.  When your rating goes up you’ve got to keep climbing the ladder.” Price said.

“I don’t know (what it is about Adelaide), he just might be adrenalised by a trip away”.

“I had to saddle him up and it was like saddling up a big bear.  He was just booming and ready to go.  I said to Zac, ‘don’t be worried about what goes on in this race, back yourself, back your horse and ride your own race.  I don’t want to talk to you about tactics, just ride your own horse’.”

It was a second Group 1 victory for Spain after snaring the Orr Stakes on Streets of Avalon last year, and it carries some extra meaning, given he spent the formative years of his career in South Australia.

“I just hope I’ve done everyone proud”.  Spain said.

“Mum and Dad will be watching it at home and I’m sure there will be a few tears shed.  I’m just absolutely rapt. (Lombardo) just loves Adelaide, that’s all there is to it.  He just thrives when he’s here.  It just shows how good Mick and Michael are as trainers”.

It caps off an incredible carnival for Price and Kent Jnr, who have won an astonishing seven of the 20 stakes races on offer over the four week, and two of the four Group 1s, after Jungle Magnate took out the South Australian Derby last week.

“We bring the right horses….but the fundamentals still have to be right.

GROUP 1 GOODWOOD FOR HOMEBRED LOMBARDO

LOMBARDO (I Am Invincible-Swinging Babe) bred and co-owned by Burnewang North, blew away his rivals today (21/5) in the time honored G1 Goodwood over 1200m at Morphettville.  Unbeaten in Adelaide, Lombardo drew wide but got across and led from start to finish for an impressive 1.5 length victory.  Ridden superbly by Zac Spain and trained by Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr, it was a great thrill for all connections.

SECOND STAKES WIN FOR HOMEBRED LOMBARDO

Farm favourite LOMBARDO (I Am Invincible-Swinging Babe) took out the Manihi Classic (Listed, 1100m) at Morphettville today (2/4).  A winner of the Village Stakes (Listed, 1200m) Cat Caulfield in October, the Burnewang North bred give-year-old gelding added a second stakes race to his record when he defeated Rock The Ring by a length and a quarter, while Shamino was a further half a length away in third.  Well placed by Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr and ridden beautifully by Zac Spain.  Congratulations to our fellow connections.

ALL ABOUT THE BUBBLES – NZB 29 December 2021

All About the Bubbles

29 December 2021

On The Bubbles won impressively at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

The clear headline act on the order of entry for the $1m Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) is On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau), whose bold performance at Ellerslie on Boxing Day showed that he was right on track.

Purchased for $90,000 by David Ellis from the Leanach Lodge draft in Book 1 of Karaka 2020, On The Bubbles played a starring role last season with his victories in the $1m Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and the Group One Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

The Brazen Beau gelding missed the spring due to an entrapped epiglottis, and he was a beaten favourite when he resumed with a second placing at Te Rapa earlier this month. But it was a different story back at Ellerslie as he fought off the challenge of the previously undefeated Pareanui Bay (NZ) (Lonhro) to win the $80,000 Listed Shaw’s Wire Ropes Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m).

Trainer Jamie Richards will now give him the opportunity to add the Karaka Million 3YO Classic to his two-year-old triumph last season, joining stablemate Probabeel (NZ) (Savabeel) as the only horse in history to complete that double. The TAB have now made him a $2.80 favourite.

“On that run, you’d think he would be hard to beat in the Karaka Million,” Ellis said. “I’m so happy for all the owners, including our children, who have shares in the horse. It’s a great thrill and such an excitable ownership group.

“It’s been publicly documented that he had some breathing issues and underwent an operation, but Opie (Bosson, jockey) said to me afterwards that he breathed really well today. He’s comfortable here and loves the course.”

New Year’s Day could bring some movement on the Karaka Million 3YO Classic order of entry, with the Group Two Skycity Auckland Guineas (1600m) at Ellerslie set to feature a number of bright prospects.
